Mercedes-AMG Unveils Plans for Standalone Electric Performance SUV

This SUV will use the same all-new architecture as the future AMG electric sedan; internally called AMG.EA, newly developed for high-performance electric vehicles. This already means a first in fully electric vehicles for AMG, which may turn out to be a serious bend in the direction of the brand. The teaser image that came with the announcement hinted at an SUV with a more station wagon-like shape-essentially the opposite of the softer, more rounded styling taken by its current EQ electric models. While the teaser gives an idea of the design, performance specification, range, and confirmed release date remain a secret for now.

This SUV will be yet another milestone for Mercedes-AMG, given that it will mark the first model to leave the factory completely electric, having been built from scratch as an AMG. The company has been involved in developing high-performance automobiles since 2010, when the SLS AMG supercar went into production, followed by several models that included two generations of the two-door AMG GT and the four-door AMG GT, plus the newest SL-Class. In fact, the SL-Class is even offered in a non-AMG Maybach model-a demonstration of breadth for the brand, with the company dead serious about innovation across various market segments.

This places Mercedes-AMG's electric SUV directly in competition with BMW's M division. The German rival last year launched the XM, its very first dedicated SUV, but it was a plug-in hybrid-not fully electric. Meanwhile, the powertrain of the BMW XM does similar duty on the next M5; these two worlds continue to converge. Production reportedly wraps up on the XM in 2028, which would leave an opening for Mercedes-AMG if its electric SUV arrives sooner.

With electric vehicles gaining more traction with each passing quarter, the race is officially on between each luxury automaker for dominance in the electric SUV department. If it indeed offers great performance, range, and pioneering design elements, the Mercedes-AMG electric SUV can easily pose a stronger challenge to the BMW XM.
